'Rules' of social media


Lon Safko on Fast Company has written a 10 commandements of social media. This sort of gaff can irritate me. First of all, it should really be about ENGAGEMENT. I don't believe Social media needs it's own set of rules, I think if you look at the fundamentals of communication - engage, entertain, offer useful and meaningful content, then you can't go wrong. This 'blog often, upload often, comment often' to me smacks of the attitudes of post-modern media buyers who would bombard audiences with messages, and call it success.

We are becoming expert sifters - and irrelevant blog/messsages/videos/contents/photos/tweets not only stops the useful stuff getting done, it propogates more and more and more clutter. Note the rise in people who are culling Facebook friends....
